What is this site? - Solaris RPG is a text-based, multiplayer, role playing game. This website and forum community are dedicated to advancing all aspects of the game over time with the help of the players in the community. The game is NOT graphical, it is NOT massively multiplayer, and isn’t trying to become anything other than a simple text-based role playing game. The game is not freestyle or freeform although we do encourage creativity and fresh ideas. We've taken great pride in our systems, rules, and guidelines. Please respect that if you decide to register a character.
When was Solaris RPG created? – Solaris RPG was established in the summer of 1996 between two friends (we’ll refer to them as Steve and Lewis for the purposes of this "About" page) out of several different ideas. It started as a live action role play (or LARP) between two friends and slowly made its way to pencil and paper. When Steve received his first computer and discovered the World Wide Web the game quickly moved online and made its way to MSN Homepages in 1997. It was then played out through ICQ chat rooms. Later on it made its way to Homestead where is gained its own chat rooms and a much larger homepage which later developed into a very small website. Around 1998, or early 1999, it was moved to Angelfire hosting and then in 2000 to Clanpages hosting all the while various revisions occurred. In 2000 the domain name www.solarisrpg.com was purchased. Eventually in 2002 it was moved to PowWeb hosting, which is where it remains today.
Who made Solaris RPG? – Credit can’t totally be given to one person, because the website and game has changed so much through the efforts of so many individuals. It was founded and has always been maintained by Steve, but has grown with the help of many individuals. Several of the bigger helping hands of the site are its staff members, Dustin, Ben, Jeff, and several of its long time players. Steve went to great lengths to make sure the game remained open to new ideas from its players.
Why is Solaris RPG here? – Why do we have any role playing games? To have fun… and play out the life of an imaginary character. Solaris may be played through text-based chat rooms over the Internet, and for some that might seem dull, but to us Solarians, it can be a blast. Back in the day, some players of Solaris would have a single role play session last for hours upon hours. In fact, the current record for longest RP session is roughly 20 hours. That's a LOT of role playing.
